You may recall that Google showcased its Duplex AI technology to the public several years ago. It demonstrated how an AI assistant can make real phone calls to businesses on the user"s behalf with a natural-sounding voice. The feature, accessible via Google Assistant, eventually made it to Pixel phones, iOS devices, and other non-Google smartphones.
In its latest update, the search giant announced it is rolling out a similar capability to Google Search. It"s introducing an agentic AI feature that can make phone calls to local businesses on your behalf to obtain pricing and availability, without requiring you to pick up the phone.
You can find a new option in search results called "Have AI check pricing" when looking for specific queries, such as pet grooming or dry cleaning needs. After you fill in the required details through a form and submit the request, Google Search will contact different businesses to consolidate information about appointments and services.
For instance, you can search for something like "pet groomers near me." Google Search will ask you to enter details such as whether you have a cat or a dog, its type, the services you need, and your preferred time. You can choose to receive updates over SMS text messages or email.
The feature is rolling out to all users living in the US. However, those with Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscriptions will have higher limits. Google stated on its support page that automated calls are recorded and monitored for quality assurance. Meanwhile, businesses can opt out of automated calls from Google.
The search giant also announced some other AI-powered updates for Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers. It"s bringing Gemini 2.5 Pro support to AI Mode for these users, which will be available in the drop-down menu. The upgraded model announced earlier this year comes with advanced reasoning, math, and coding questions to help with complex queries.
Furthermore, AI Mode is gaining support for Deep Search, which will provide even more thorough responses and in-depth research on various topics of interest. Google said that Deep Search can help "you save hours by issuing hundreds of searches, reasoning across disparate pieces of information and crafting a comprehensive, fully-cited report in minutes."
These new features will be available to AI Pro and Ultra users who have opted into the AI Mode experiment in Search Labs.
