The top bid for the GameStop stapler auction is now $250,000

The items in GameStops Switch 2 stapler auction on eBay

A few days ago, we reported that GameStop is auctioning a stapler. This isn't just any ordinary stapler; rather it's the infamous item that enjoyed its viral moment on the Nintendo Switch's 2 launch day. Basically, a GameStop employee in New York City stapled a receipt to the box of a launch day Nintendo Switch 2, and when the happy reached eventually opened the console, they were aghast to find out that the staple pins had pierced deeply into the box and had damaged the display of the console too.

This incident went viral online, and GameStop eventually decided to turn it into something more positive. The retail outlet listed the black stapler on eBay, along with other items involved in the incident, including the "first stapled Nintendo Switch 2" (with its screen replaced), the damaged box, and the staple pins that were originally embedded in it. The listing also contains a certificate of authenticity from GameStop CEO Ryan Cohen.

When GameStop listed the items on eBay on July 10, the top bid price quickly jumped to $17,000. However, in the past couple of days, the top bid has hit an almost 15x multiple and is now valued at a staggering $249,900 after 284 bids at the time of this writing. It is important to note that all proceeds from the StapleGate auction will go toward the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, which is likely also a factor in boosting the bid price.

There are still roughly three days to go until the auction closes, so what the top bid will eventually end up being is anyone's best guess.

In the past few years, we have seen an unsealed 1987 NES copy of The Legend of Zelda go for $870,000, a 1985 NES copy of Super Mario Bros. end up at $660,000, and an antique Apple I sell for $365,000. It'll be interesting to see if a stapler is able to break the elusive million-dollar-barrier.
